Add tags to improve organization

While I like the ability to use Collections to organize my papers I think there is another level of organization that could greatly improve the program and that is the use of tags.  I have seen this type of system implemented in a program called Things and it really helps.  What tags allows one to do is to use another method to cross-reference their papers to different topics/projects, etc..  For example say I have several papers that are a series of methods A,B,C, and D.  Then say I have a series of papers that are project related and I use Collections to identify them as 1,2,and 3.  If I had the ability to use tags I could tag the methods according to topic while at the same time linking them to the specific Collections that also employ them.  Since methods are something I will want to use universially over time I can keep them organized via tags and the apply them to the collections as I need.  I know that you can accomplish this by having collections for all of the items I have listed but the ability to apply them in the manner I have described makes organization much more powerful.

Re: Add tags to improve organization

Tags would be awesome, they're just easier to manage then countless smart folders.

And mega bonus points if it ties in with the default mac metadata system so we can search for them in spotlight as well.

You can always write your tag words in notes section. In that way when you search in notes section, you can see all papers with that keyword (or tag)

I second the tags idea, in particular the implementation of tags in Things by Cultured Code. It is very nice to have a keyboard shortcut to add disconnected words as tags. The notes field is intimidating and I feel I should write something more complete there.

Re: Add tags to improve organization

Sorry if I have missed something, but I agree with Yogesh9ic that what is being requested here sounds a lot like the already present keyword functionality (accessible from the Notes pane next to the Info view). fercook - keywords are in fact distinct from notes, although they both are accessible thorugh the Notes view. The Keywords section is located right above the Notes area.

That said, the keyword management in Papers is currently quite limited. There is no convenient way to see all existing tags in order to organise/merge/standardise them for example. However, I think the Papers team is fully aware of this and it is quite probable that the functionality will be improved in some future release (though I do not know how high it is in the list of priorities).

Re: Add tags to improve organization

Hi guys,

before I tried out Papers I found Yep by Ironic Softare. It's basically an advanced finder, specialized on pdfs, with tag features. All my articles were tagged before importing them into Papers. Now all my tags are shown with an additional ampersand within my keyword column, and they are fully searchable. It looks kinda weird but is functional.

Ironic software have a freeware tool named tagit that can also tag files (like Yep does). This may be an easy workaround until tagging is implemented into Papers...

Hope that helps,
sm

Re: Add tags to improve organization

Ideally, tags would be a feature distinct than keywords for the following reasons:
- Keywords are automatically filled when importing papers, therefore interfering with tags; obviously, one can use a prefix, such tags:RNA, to make them searchable, but this would be tedious;
- I agree with fercook, Things has a nice tagging system. For tags to work, it should be easy (as in fast) to add them. I find adding keywords a tedious process: select notes, type keywords, save. The keyboard shortcuts in Things make tagging easy (fast);
- It would be nice to have a tag view (a new entry underneath Journals in the left pane), just like browsing by Authors or by Journals, where you would see the list of tags with the number of papers associtated with it. Just like with the Authors view, one could merge tags: say you not very consistent when entering tags and you have 'Algorithm' and 'Algorithms', you could merge the two tags into a single one, say 'Algorithm'.
- It would be fantastic if the tags were saved in the metadata of the PDF file in order to take advantage of the tags outside of Papers

Re: Add tags to improve organization

I would like to add a request for tags. Before stumbling on Papers (which I just purchased but am waiting for my order to be processed), I have been using Yep to store my academic PDFs. Each time I enter an article into Yep, I've added it's keywords as tags and on some, I've added additional tags to groups of articles because, as was mentioned in a post above, I find that easier to do than create a numnber of folders.

Ultimately, while I realize keywords and tags are different, I use then interchangably and find them to be incredibly useful. I'd appreciate the ability to import the tags already attached to articles stored in my Yep library to those in Papers.

Thanks!

Re: Add tags to improve organization

I also want tags. Collections are a good first hack at tagging since you can put a paper in multiple collections. I use this extensively, but I now have so many collections that they're difficult to use:

I think collections would be much more usable if they were presented as a tag cloud, similar to Yep. Varying the font sizes would serve two very useful purposes: (1) emphasize larger collections, and (2) shrink the height of the collection list, since the long tail of small collections would take up much less space. And instead of creating a collection and then adding papers to it, it would be nicer to have new tags automatically appear in the tag cloud as the user adds tags to papers.

I agree.  I basically want Papers and Yep to join forces.  Yep's tags and organizational features are terrific.  Paper's import and scientific metadata features are terrific.

Re: Add tags to improve organization

I also would like improved tagging and tag searching more than any other feature.

I include in this, keyword filling during Match as well.  As a physicist, I usually
Scitation - http://scitation.aip.org/ - as my primary resource for searching for articles.  These
articles have keywords when I look them up via Scitation, but to use Match in Papers, I have
to use Google Scholar which does not have the keyword data -- at least it does not import
them.  Automatic import of keywords to be great.

Also, yes, entering keywords is tedious, and yes, searching via "Smart Searches" is really
inelegant.  The current interface's similarity to iTunes is nice for its short learning curve, but
it suffers from some of the same weakness.  Note that even iTunes supports tagging
multiple files at once, which AFAIK, is not possible in Papers.

Re: Add tags to improve organization

This would be awesome. I love using Papers, but I've never been able to organize my papers using the collections. The hierarchy of folders has never worked for me (topics just end up getting buried in weird places), and they've always felt too slow and buggy to use regularly.

I specifically logged onto here hoping to hear news that Papers was thinking of implementing a "tag cloud"-like system. "Yep" looks like exactly what I would want (maybe I'll check it out, until Papers catches up...)

Please implement a tag system, guys. You've got an awesome product, but it's lacking two major features that I need: tag-based organization, and editing PDFs (like Skim)

Re: Add tags to improve organization

I agree that current implementation of tagging (keywords) is too limited to be useful and folder hierarchy is not a flexible enough organizing instrument. Tag/keyword management tool is really needed. Also I would like to have the keywords imported from the databases (e.g. MeSH terms) to exist in a separate namespace from the ones I create. The current behavior (there is no option to strip imported records of keywords, is there?) forces somebody's tagging on my collection.
