UPDATE: Papers for iPhone 1.1 is now available in the iTunes app store
Hi, good news we have just submitted Papers for iPhone 1.1 for review to the iTunes app store. Normally this would mean that within the next few days it should appear in iTunes. We'll keep you posted on the review process.
Here's what's new in Papers for iPhone 1.1:
Major new features
- Added ability to search your library, authors and journals.
- Added ability to fetch more than 30 search results.
- Added ACM and IEEE Xplore search engines.
Other improvements and bugfixes
- Sorting on title is now case-insensitive.
- Fixed Google Scholar search engine.
- Fixed downloading PDFs from JSTOR and Wiley.
- Fixed a bug where sharing would crash the app
- Fixed an issue where notes were lost before quit.
- Fixed Crash in MTPDFMessageDialog.
- Fixed ezproxy support for gate1.fr .
- User Forum is now directed to mobile safari
- Improved wifi-warning during pairing.
- Improved various graphics within the app.
Thanks to everyone who has helped us improve Papers for iPhone and has given us feedback. We'll do our best to continue to make the program better and better. Issues we're currently looking into include:
- Improvement of the rendering quality of PDFs (under some zoom levels the text can get blurry, we're talking to Apple about this)
- Maintaining the collection hierarchy of sub collections.
- Increasing the 1000 paper limit
- Ability to email PDF files.
Note that some of these will not necessarily be fixed in the next update, but we just wanted to let you know we're working on them.
Cheers,
Alex

@richierichie For certain sites PDF downloading has been fixed for others not yet. In all cases we have discovered so far the problem is unfortunately not so much Papers but either a limitation in the current iPhone SDK (for example, although mobile safari handles security certificates fine, the webkit components we have to use doesn't) or a limitation in the form of the publishers not building very iPhone friendly websites (for example with the PDF loading in frames. This means we have to come up with workarounds that fit in the already limited set of options on the iPhone (webkit is far less flexible than on the Mac for 3rd party developers).
We have added a forum topic where you can report websites that don't allow the downloading of PDFs: http://mekentosj.com/papers/forum15/vie … hp?id=2713

Any luck in getting Apple's seal of approval?

The update didn't solve the Google Scholar bug for me. It still doesn't find any results.. Am I the only one having still trouble with this?

Sorry everybody, we just received the follow reaction from Apple:
Dear Alexander,
Papers cannot be posted to the App Store because it is transferring excessive volumes of data over the cellular network, which as outlined in the iPhone SDK Agreement section 3.3.15, is prohibited:
" If an Application requires or will have access to the cellular network, then additionally such Application:
- Must comply with Apple's best practices and other guidelines on how Applications should
access and use the cellular network;
- Must not in Apple's reasonable judgment excessively use or unduly burden network
capacity or bandwidth;"
This was apparently something that they had troubles with in the 1.0, but now they do. There's no other option than to only allow downloading of PDF files if you're connected to a WiFi network.
Many thanks for your patience everybody.

That really does *not* sound reasonable. You advertised and sold your software having advertised that ability, based upon *their* having accepted it in the first place. Shouldn't you fight that and make them reconsider how that is affecting how people will view your business?
Secondly, many, many other apps allow you to download pdf's and other large files, or even stream media, which takes up more bandwidth. I have two programs on my phone through which I can access any file from anywhere, view the file live, and even download it onto my phone. How is that any different than what you all are doing?
In real world scenarios, users are not going to have an hour long session downloading PDF's from repositories using Papers for iPhone: such sessions will be done on the computer. But the ability to find and download a PDF on the fly -- an advertised feature -- is one of the primary reasons I bought the software. Downloading a 2mb PDF does not seem "unreasonable" use or unduly burden of the network, especially compared to to other permitted but bandwidth-heavy usages.
I am not blaming you, since Apple has done their own "bait and switch" effectively; but to the end user, all that matters is functionality. And you advertised something -- a major selling point -- that is now being dropped. Even if it means dropping it for now, in order to get other bug fixes and features out -- can you then not fight this one out with Apple?

Prior to jailbreaking my iPhone, I used YouTube to watch every possible vid I could on YouTube to make sure I used up my 1GB of provided data. Now PDAnet helps with that…

So, for clarification, does this mean that 1.1 is finally on the way, but will only allow download of PDFs through Wifi?
I don't really mind that because I am using an iPod Touch, so Wifi only. However, I must say that it sounds like an enormous reversal in Apple's policy. Youtube might be exempt because of the tight ties with the iPhone itself, but there are many, many apps that allow download of huge amounts of data, including several other PDF viewers, and other video apps like Joost. It all seems pretty ridiculous to me.

@Anders Papers for iPhone 1.1 has been on the way for a long time already, but unfortunately Apple didn't approve it yet. Hopefully soon. (@talazem, we have certainly tried to argue the points you raise with Apple but they simply won't respond).
Papers 1.1 will allow download of PDFs through WiFi AND download of PDFs smaller than 3Mb over the cellular network, which should cover most research articles out there.

We just got word from Apple that the 1.1 update of Papers has been (finally) excepted in the iTunes app store. It should become available within the next 24hrs. Don't forget to use the free backup function before updating your library!
Many thanks everybody for your patience!

I just downloaded it, and it seems to be working great. Thanks for fixing google scholar, etc.

Hi.
Downloaded the iphone 1.1. I have several PDFs which are non-standard size (larger than A4). They do not seem to be rendering properly in the new iphone pages. In portrait mode the left and bottom are cut out and in landscape mode I cannot see the bottom 25% in each page. No matter how much I try these parts remain hidden.
I uploaded the PDF in AirSharing app and the regular iphone PDF renders it perfectly.
The PDF looks perfect on pages on the mac. What is the problem here.

Well, JSTOR is still dead for me. My institution requires a login prior to running the ezproxy webpage. Indeed, even when I run the Papers bookmarklet from Mobile Safari, when Papers launches I'm sent to a login on my institution's website, but the page chokes the program when I try and enter my login details. While I could remedy this in version 1.0, in 1.1 Papers dies and I need to quit the program.
What we need is a built-in browser, as with the desktop version.
Still, in every other respect, a fantastic update.

Unfortunately there seems to be a bug in Apple's webkit component that causes these problems with password fields. Very unfortunate because it works fine in Mobile Safari, just not in the Safari components 3rd party developers have to use ![]()

You can't use Joost on the cellular network either. You have to use wifi for those apps as well, so in a sense, it's not a huge reversal on Apple's policy. I don't think it's really Apple who's to blame, as it is the cellular companies. Overall, I think it sucks (I'm already paying so much for the data plan!), though I'm happy that the limit was raised to 5mb. Good negotiations!

I noticed that PDFs of papers render almost instantaneously on iPhone 3G S, which makes reading much more pleasurable. However, a bug kills the joy - Papers freezes every time PDF view switches from portrait to landscape. Is this a common problem?
